Topic 1: Mastery Literary Heritage
Oliver Twist
Reading and studying an abridged version of Dickens' classic tale of an orphan in Victorian London.
Mastery Writing
A writing programme which teaches students to all aspects of grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation.
Reading For Pleasure
Reading the classic gothic fiction tale 'Cirque Du Freak'.
Assessment
The first assessment is based on the topics covered in Period 1.

Curriculum Period 1:
Curriculum content
Our Day Out
Students read Willy Russell's 'Our Day Out' and cover key aspects of the play such as character, plot, setting, context and stage directions. Students will learn about how the play creates an understanding of Liverpool in the 1970's and how Willy Russell uses this platform to comment on social class, gender and the education system at this point in history.
Romantic poetry
Students will study a range of romantic poetry selected from both 19th century and the modern day. Whilst working their way though a selection of poetry, students will learn about poetic techniques, structure and form whilst also drawing comparisons between the cluster of poems studied.
Persuasive speeches
Students will explore the skills required to write persuasively using different forms including letter writing, speeches and magazine articles. Taking inspiration from Dragon's Den pitches to inspirational speeches, students will develop a successful persuasive writing style which uses specific language techniques. These lessons will build the foundations for some of the skills required for GCSE English language.
Assessment
Students will sit a 1 hour examination which will cover all of the topics we have covered in this curriculum period.

Curriculum Period 2:
Curriculum content
Chinese Cinderella
Students will read Adeline Yen Mah’s autobiographical text 'Chinese Cinderella’ and cover key aspects of the book such as character, plot, setting and context. Students will learn about how the book creates an understanding of Chinese culture and how Adeline Yen Mah uses this platform to comment on social class, gender and family relationships at this point in history in China. We will also focus the conventions of autobiographical writing.
Viewpoints and Perspectives
Students will learn how to identify and develop a certain viewpoint from a text which they can write about and offer their own perspective on. This unit of work will cover different forms of non-fictional texts and ask the students to concentrate on identifying the viewpoints of the writer and to compare these with the viewpoints of others. These lessons will build the foundations for some of the skills required for GCSE English language.
Creative writing
Students learn about a range of different methods which help to develop the skill of producing original writing. Students will look at key concepts and writing skills, how to zoom in on detail and how to employ figurative language to achieve impact. This unit of work is designed to boost both confidence and skill when producing fiction.
Assessment
Students will sit a 1 hour examination comprising of questions covering all three of the topics covered in this curriculum period.

Students will read Louis Sachar's novel 'Holes' and cover key aspects of the book such as character, plot, setting and context.

Curriculum Period 1:
Curriculum content
Topic 1: Creative Reading
Students learn about different ways in which they can extract meaning from a piece of fiction. This will include work on comprehension, selecting information, linguistic analysis, structural analysis and the ability to bring all of these elements together in order to justify an opinion.
Topic 2: Of Mice and Men
Students read John Steinbeck's 'Of Mice and Men' and cover key aspects such as character, plot, setting and context. Students will learn about how the novella creates a microcosm of life in 1930's America and how John Steinbeck uses this platform to comment on race, gender and social class at this point in history.
Topic 3: Creative Writing
Students learn about a range of different methods which help to develop the skill of producing original writing. Students will look at key concepts and writing skills, how to zoom in on detail and how to employ figurative language to achieve impact. This unit of work is designed to boost both confidence and skill when producing fiction.
Topic 4: A Midsummer Night's Dream
Students will read William Shakespeare's play 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and learn about how Shakespeare creates meaning through his wonderfully rich and complex use of language. Students will look at the conventions of a play, presentation of characters and how the genre of comedy is created.
Assessment
Students will sit a 1 hour assessment which will refer to topics 1-4.
Curriculum Period 2:
Curriculum content
Topic 5: Non-Fiction
In this unit, students will learn about non-fiction text types and the rhetorical devices which writers employ in order to persuade and argue their ideas to a reader. Students will both analyse and create non-fiction writing in order to understand how writers influence their reader and to practise employing similar techniques.
Topic 6: The Speckled Band
Students will read Arthur Conan Doyle's 'The Speckled Band' and look at how the detective fiction genre is brought to life through its most famous character: Sherlock Holmes. Students will analyse how the narrative structure, detailed description and interesting characterisation entertain a reader with mystery and suspense.
Topic 7: SLE Presentation
A short unit of work in which students will learn about, plan, rehearse and deliver a 5 minute presentation which will be part of their GCSE in English Language.
Topic 8: Conflict Poetry
Students will study a range of poetry selected from the AQA 'Power and Conflict' poetry anthology. Whilst working their way though a selection of poetry, students will learn about poetic technique, structure and form whilst also drawing comparisons between the cluster of poems studied.
Assessment
Students will sit a 1 hour assessment which will refer to topics 5-8.
Curriculum Period 3:
Curriculum content
Topic 9: GCSE Transition
Students will prepare for GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature through a series of lessons geared towards the challenges that await next year. Students will also complete their Spoken Language Endorsement which involves delivering a short presentation - this will count towards GCSE English Language.

Assessment
There will be two exams for the Year 10 assessment
- A GCSE exam question on A Christmas Carol (mark out of 30 and reported as a percentage). The question will be on one of the key themes in the novel.
- English Language Paper 2 (Reading and Writing Non-Fiction). Mark out of 80.

The subject areas taught during the spring term include:
- Love and Relationships (a selection of poems from the AQA Anthology - to be taught in clusters)
- Macbeth by William Shakespeare
Assessment
- GCSE exam question on Macbeth (mark out of 34 and reported as a percentage).

Curriculum content
The subject areas taught during the summer term include:
- English Language Paper 1 (Reading and writing a selection of fiction texts)
- Love and Relationships Poetry from the AQA Anthology (taught in themed clusters)
- English Language Paper 2
- Complete any Spoken Language Endorsements not done in Year 9
